Best Quadcopter: Remote Controls

RC controlled Drone
Radio Controlled Flight Stick
Controls vary for the drones on the market. There is everything from phone app controls to RC controls for the quadcopter on the market. If you are a hobbyist and seeking a fun way to control the flight of your quadcopter, you may enjoy using your phone as the controller. However, if you are thinking about using your drone as a way to video parties, sporting events or other activities, you may want to invest in a product that has a more sensitive controller.

Another important component to quadcopters is the flight control board. This part of the quadcopter is the the computer chip that basically serves as the brain. It take the input from your remote control and adjusts the signal to control the speed of the propellers and other flight variables that allows the drone to turn, dive, climb and hover. Other operations can be built into the flight control board like return home, and waypoint.

If you are just beginning as a quadcopter pilot, or you are buying a drone for a younger child, you may want to investigate the Headless Mode quadcopters. Since most quadcopters are symmetrical in their build it is difficult when piloting to remember where the front of the copter is. Headless mode removes the requirement to adjust your controls due to the orientation of the drone and keeps your remote control adjusted. In a non headless drone you have to adjust your rudder when you make turns to compensate for where the front of the drone is orientated.

Many of the quadcopters on the market offer controllers as part of the package. However your racing drones and professional quadcopter may require you to buy an radio control flight stick to pilot your drone.

What to Consider

phone controlled drone
Smartphone Flight Interface
  • Headless/ Care Free Mode - Pilot controls drone as if it is still pointing in the starting position at take off, eliminates the need to adjust flight controls as the copter makes turns during flight.
  • Gyro Stabilization – Usually a built in function for most flight control boards that helps keep the quadcopter level and assists stability helping with the pilot's control of the drone.
  • Self Leveling – A function that allows the drone to stay level when the pilot lets go off the pitch and yaw sticks on his remote control.
  • Altitude Hold – A function that allows the drone to hover at a certain height from the ground without the pilot adjusting the remote.
  • Position Hold – This function allow the quadcopter to hover in one place without the need of the pilot to adjust the controls.
  • Return Home – The drone will use this function to return back to the place of it's take off.
  • Waypoint Navigation – This function is basically creating a flight path on a map for the drone to follow. Handy if you are taking pictures or video as you can also adjust the orientation of the drone to keep the camera focused on the action.

Best Quadcopter: Battery

The enjoyment you receive from a new quadcopter may rely on the battery. There are as many batteries for quadcopters as there are quadcopters for sale. Not all batteries are the same and the size and weight of your drone will determine how long your flight times will be. Do not be surprised if manufacturers flight times are only five to ten minutes in duration. You can extend flight time by switching batteries with more capacity.

In your search for the best quadcopter look over the battery specification and seek out a higher mAh on the battery. What is mAh? It is the total amount of energy that a battery can hold at one time. There is a trade off however. The higher the mAh, the bigger the battery is and the heavy it battery is. The extra weight can play into the length of flight time as more weight draws more power from the battery so seek some balance here.

Many drones are using the lithium ion battery to power themselves. Usually you can get three hundred to five hundred charges out of they power packs. The other good news is they are easy to find and replace through online vendors should you require a new battery pack for your quadcopter.

What to Consider

  • Charging time. Time varies between manufacturers, you will have to be aware that it takes 2 to 4 hours to charge your quadcopter. If you plan to extend your flight time you may want additional batteries on hand.
  • Battery life. Most drones on the market will have a flight time between 5 and 12 minutes before needing to recharge.  It is a good idea to pay attention to the manufacturers specs on battery life during flight time before you purchase your quadcopter.
  • Replacement batteries. Spare batteries are a must for the quadcopter pilot. You can keep an extra set on hand to extend your flight time or there may come the time that you have to complete replace the battery system in your drone. Either way, double check online that you can purchase additional battery packs for your brand of drone before you buy.

Best Quadcopter: Camera

Camera drones are becoming the rage. There are many camera drones on the market and vary as to their capability. Some drones use built in cameras while others require a camera like the GoPro be purchased separately.

Be aware, an external camera will add weight to your quadcopter and can effectively lower your flight time due to the added weight.

Depending on the model of your quadcopter, you will find cameras from 2 megapixels to 14 megapixels. Some will have the capability to record video while other will not. Then there are models that will transmit the video in a live feed to you while recording in real time.

What to Consider

  • Megapixels of the camera - lower megapixels bring lower quality images.
  • Lens Angle - wide angle lens (130°) bring a more realistic video quality.
  • Recording speed - can you set the frames per second on your video?
  • Gimbal or Fixed camera - a camera on gimbal will remove any bumps or shakes in the video.
