Parrot Bebop Drone

The Parrot Bebop Drone is a top seller on Amazon, which is not surprising as Parrot was a pioneer in the consumer drone market. Many people refer to it as a drone, multirotor, UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) or quadcopter. The Parrot Bebop is a middle of the line product that is great for beginning pilots.  It is rather simplistic in its design and utilizes the pilots smartphone or tablet as the radio controler. There is a nice camera on the Parrot Bebop and rests in a 3 axis gimbal even though it does not look like it. This camera drone is for sale on Amazon for around $450 which is a great price for a drone with this many features and will be enjoyed by an adult or adolescent.

Parrot Bebop Drone Design

The Parrot Bebop has a very good design which is a bit unconventional from other drones on the market. You receive the frame of light ABS plastic to hold the rotors and encases the electronics in a center chamber. The body of the quadcopter is light weight styrofoam which houses the camera and electronics.

The power source is a decent 1200mAh battery which is designed to slip in a compartment on the back of the main frame. The fit is snugged up using a velcro strap. This model comes with a nice 14MP "fisheye" camera with a 180° view, the camera is mounted in the nose of the drone. Since you use your smartphone or tablet to pilot the quadcopter, you can save pictures and video directly to your phone. A fun feature of Freeflight 3™ (available for iOS, Android and Windows), flight app, is you can instantly send your favorite flight pictures and videos straight to Facebook or Instagram.

The rotor blades of the Parrot Bebop drone are made of the same lightweight ABS plastic as the frame. The props are connected to the motor shaft with a proprietary (twist lock) system Parrot devised. The manufacturer provides a special tool and a second set of propellers for future replacement. The proprietary props keep the pilot from putting the wrong prop on the wrong motor. Most low end drone manufacturers secure their props using a pressed on prop. These pressed props rely on friction to secure the prop to the motor shaft and can become loose over time. Kudos to Parrot for taking this extra step in their manufacturing process.

Parrot supplies a great manual with the product.

Parrot Bebop Drone Controller

Parrot Bebop Control
The Parrot Bebop uses the pilots smartphone or tablet as the flight controller.
The Parrot Bebop does not come with a radio controller. Instead the pilot uses his/ her smartphone or tablet utilizing the Freeflight 3™ application. The first person view is delivered to the application using WiFi built into the Parrot Bebop Drone. The quadcopter is connected to GPS positioning via the smartphone / tablet with a stabilization system to help with flight.

Through the application the pilot takes control using virtual joysticks built into the app for altitude, speed, yaw and pitch like a normal controller. The app also allows the pilot to access video and picture recording as well as other functions like the "one touch flip" mode, emergency land, and home modes.

Since your are basically working with a computer to run the drone and it's camera, you can upload your flight video and pictures directly to Facebook and Instagram.

There are some reports that the application is a bit sluggish and makes controlling the done somewhat difficult. However other pilots reports that once you overcome the learning curve the flight experience is fun and exciting. Flight Mode - change the flight mode

            Flying the Parrot Bebop Drone

The Parrot Bebop drone offers a lot of fun while flying. It combines both small and larger drone capabilities. It is very maneuverable like smaller quadcopters. But like larger multirotors it is stable in flight. Check out the Q500 Typhoon or Blade Nano to see what the smaller comparable drones can do.

You have two flight modes with the Parrot Bebop. The first mode, used largely by beginner pilots, limits the turn and climb speed of the drone. The second mode opens everything up making it quicker when turning and climbing. While in the second mode this mulitrotor can complete a number of stunts. It will do a backflip and can be flown inverted. While this drone has the neat stunt functions, it does not have return home or auto landing features built in.

Taking Photos and Videos with the Parrot Bebop Drone

The camera on the Parrot Bebop is a very nice quality camera. The unit is built into the nose of the drone and is a 14Mp, 1080HD camera with 180° field view. The camera is positioned in a forward down angle and sits in a 3 axis gimbal for stabilization.

Using a fisheye lens the camera offers no distortion or curve of the horizion and is topped off by a splash and dust proof lens cover.

This is a very good camera set up for the price of this drone. While we don't recommend using it commercially this camera drone is great for the consumer enthusiast breaking into aerial photography and video.

            Parrot Bebop Drone Battery Life

The Parrot Bebop drone uses a 12oomAh battery. This will give you about 11 minutes of flight time with the drone. The manufacturer privides a second battery with the initial purchase so overall flight time can be extended to 22 minutes. That is above average for drones like the Parrot Bebop Drone utilizing the 1200mAh type batteries. You can purchase a car charging kit. Spare batteries are fairly cheap at around $12 each so you could buy extra to increase your flight times.

            Parrot Bebop Drone Repairs

This quadcopter comes with a spare set of propellers and prop guards and you can buy additional props for less than $5. The manufacturer includes a proprietary tool with the drone which allows you to swap out any damaged rotors. There are many replacement parts available for the Parrot Bebop drone however so you should have no issues in repairing this quadcopter.

The Parrot Bebop Drone is a great quadcopter for beginning to midlevel pilots with an interest in aerial video and photography. With it’s mid-level price (around $450 on Amazon) it is a great drone. It is fun and easy to fly with its control app and offers thrills with the flip modes. Overall due to the price, warranty, reputation of Parrot and capabilities we understand why it is a top seller on Amazon.

This Quad is really very nice for the money. I paid $65 for the UDI 818A with camera included. I removed the safety canopy and replaced it with one I made from a plastic cup. This allowed the quad to be more agile due to less surface area contacting with the wind. I suggest the Turnigy 600mah batteries. These take about 45min to charge and give about 9min of flight time. Also, due to their discharge rate, they provide allot more response from a lower throttle position. The auto-stabilization is pretty extreme which make this great for someone learning to fly as well as a stable platform for taking pictures. The camera itself is nothing to write home about but it works as advertised. One thing to note is that this quad is virtually indistructable! Crash after crash, it continues to perform reliably. Out of the 9 quads I currently own, which range in price from $40 to $175, the UDI818A has proven itself to be the best overall value for my money.

My first foray into multi-rotor flight. I picked this up as a starter set based on advice from a local users group that learning to fly is best done before investing in a copter that does all the work for you by relying on gps and altitude locks. You will need to actively fly the UDI U818A. It's stable in flight, but easily pushed around by the lightest breeze. It doesn't hold a specific location or altitude on its own. It worked right out of the box as soon as I had charged the flight battery. Be warned that there is plenty of power to send this flying quickly out of your control range, which will then cause it to loose synch and flutter lightly back to the ground (or tree top). The only damage mine has incurred is the occasional displacement of a prop shaft that needs to be pressed back into place to fully mesh the offset gearing.
Perfect quadcopter at a great price!
