The Syma X8C Quadcopter is a top seller on Amazon. Many people refer to is as a multirotor, UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), or drone. The Syma X8C is a middle of the line product and fits into the toy category of quadcopters. Syma carries a very good name in the toy drone market and has stepped up its design on the X8C. While the drone looks much like the DJI Phantom Quadcopter Series, it can not compete in the professional level of drones. Syma has done a nice job on the airframe of this drone making it look beefy and providing a camera that is removable. This camera drone is for sale on Amazon for around $90 which is a great entry price to get started flying for either an adult or adolescent. It competes mostly closely to the Syma X5C in capabilities and Price.
Syma X8C Design
The Syma X8C has very nice design. You receive the frame of light plastic which holds the rotors and encases the electronics. The body of the drone looks high end and encloses the battery compartment and motors. There are also rotor shields supplied with the drone to protect the rotor blades.
The power source is a 2000mAh battery which is designed to slip in a compartment under the main frame. The battery charges in two to three hours. You will get about 8 minutes of flight time with this battery. If you remove the camera you might extended your flight time to 10 to 12 minutes.
This model comes with a small 2 MP camera that also attaches under the battery compartment, utilizing power connectors into the frame to draw power for its use. A 4GB micro USB card is used to hold pictures and video taken by the Syma X8C camera.
The rotor blades of the Syma X8C are made of the same lightweight plastic as the frame. They measure 9 inches in diameter and are connected to the motor shaft by friction (pressed on). The manufacturer These pressed props rely on friction to secure the prop to the motor shaft and can become loose over time.
The frame of the Syma X8C incorporates LED lights. There are red LED’s under the front, green LED’s under the rear.
Syma X8C Controller
The Syma X8C comes with a 2.4 GHz radio controller. The radio controller is the only form of flight control for the quadcopter, it can not be controlled through WiFi nor through a phone app. The radio controller is powered by four double A batteries. There are reports of flying to a distance of 100 meters from the controller.
This is not a high end controller, it does however have enough features to make flying the Syma X8C Drone fun and comfortable. Weighing in at about ten ounces the controller is not too heavy or bulky and will fit in the and easily with comfort. The range on the 2.4 GHz controller is reported to be excellent for this level of drone and outreaches many of its competitors.
The controller has many switches and buttons layed out on it and will allow the pilot to control the following:
- 3D Eversion (Stunt Mode) - turn on and off
- Photo Mode - take picture
- Video Mode - turn video recording on and off
The controller also incorporates an LCD display which feeds information to the pilot. That information includes battery usage, applied thrust, and signal strength.
Flying the Syma X8C
The Syma X8C offers a lot of fun while flying. It flies like larger drone and is reports usable in 10mph winds. It is very maneuverable like smaller quadcopters. But like larger multirotors it is stable in flight. Check out the Parrot Bebop or Blade Nano to see what the smaller comparable drones can do.
The Syma X8C is reported to be stable in flight and manuvers at moderate speeds. While is has the 360 stunt mode it tends to be too big for advanced stunts. However for beginning pilots it is an excellent choice to learn the ends and outs of flying a quadcopter. This drone does not have the return to home function nor the auto landing features built in.
One flight function it does have is the Headless Mode which allow a new pilot the ability to fly without worrying about which way the drone is facing. In this mode turning right is always turning right and turning left is always turning left.
Taking Photos and Videos with the Syma X8C
The camera on the Syma X8C is a small, low quality, non HD camera. The unit is small and sits below the belly of the airframe. A nice feature is the camera is removable and can increase flight time when removed.
The camera captures still images at 2560X1440 pixels. At this rate the camera loses some detail, most especially if the drone is moving at the time the picture is taken. This camera does not have stability built into the camera and may blur images due to vibrations or the drone shaking from wind.
Over all this is a cheap camera for a basic drone, but is great for beginners or kids to play with. If you are looking for better video and picture quality in drone look at the Parrot Bebop or the DJI Phantom 3.
Syma X8C Battery Life
First be aware that the quadcopter takes about 2 to 3 hours to fully recharge using the included charger. This will give you about 8 minutes of flight time with the drone (10 to 12 minutes without the camera attached). That is about average for small inexpensive drones like the Syma X8C utilizing the 2000mAh type batteries. There is no way to recharge the battery via USB or car connection.
